Pakistan’s left-arm seamer Sohail Tanveer was the first-ever IPL Purple Cap holder. He claimed 22 wickets from 11 matches at a terrific economy rate of 6.46 and best figures of 6 for 14. His record for best bowling figures in IPL history remained intact till the 2019 season when West Indies’ paceman Alzarri Joseph playing for Mumbai Indians claimed 6 for 12 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Names like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Dwayne Bravo are some of those rare bowlers who have claimed the IPL Purple Cap not only once but twice in the league’s history. Bhuvneshwar Kumar achieved this feat while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and 2017. Harshal Patel did it while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2021 and Punjab Kings in 2024. One of IPL’s legends Dwayne Bravo got hold ofthe IPL Orange Cap while playing for the 5-time champions Chennai Super Kings in 2013 and 2015.
