New Zealand laid the marker down for the remainder of the series with their convincing win in the series opener. They produced an almost impeccable performance in the first ODI match against host nation Pakistan. The only negative on the day was the injury to Rachin Ravindra who had to leave the field due to a horrible face injury. The Kiwis are now set to take on South Africa in match no-2 of the Tri-Nation series at the Gaddafi Stadium, in Lahore on Monday.

Meanwhile, while batting first the Kiwis posted 330 runs in the first match. Kane Williamson played a typical innings off 58 runs off 89 balls, laying the foundations for the team, while Daryl Mitchell (81 off 84) kept the run-rate afloat. But it was the innings of Glenn Phillips which hurt the hosts the most. The 28-year-old left-handed batter hit 7 sixes and 6 fours en route to 106 runs off just 74 balls.

Out came Pakistan to bat, with Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam opening the batting. Fakhar was aggressive right from the off and played some scintillating shots, but it the other end which undid what Fakhar was doing. Babar Azam (10 off 23), Kamran Ghulam (18 off 32) and Mohammad Rizwan (3 off 11) combined for only 31 runs off just 66 balls. As the run-rate kept increasing, the pressure got to the players. Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner were the chief architect of Pakistan’s batting collapse with the duo taking three wickets each.
