IND vs ENG ODI Series: Varun Chakravarthy is a perfect example of perseverance and never giving up. At 33 years old, when many players’ career goes on a downward trajectory, it seems he is just starting. The Kolkata Knight Riders earned his maiden ODI call-up when the selection committee included his name in India’s ODI team for the three-match ODI series against England.

His inclusion, though, is purely on merit. The mystery spinner was unplayable during the recently concluded five-match T20I series against England, picking up 14 wickets, and winning the man-of-the-series award as well.

Varun Chakravarthy was in my original team – Akash Chopra

After Varun Chakaravarthy’s inclusion in the ODI team, former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Akash Chopra had his say on how to use the services of the mystery spinner.

“This is a big one as well because Varun Chakravarthy was in my original team. I felt Varun should be kept because you won’t need too many finger spinners and the wrist spinners might actually have a bigger say. However, the selectors hadn’t picked him,” Akash Chopra highlighted during a show on his YouTube channel.

“Now you have suddenly picked Varun Chakaravarthy here. Since you have decided to use his current red-hot form, which I think is the right thing to do, you will have to play him here now. You cannot make him warm the bench. You don’t call someone from outside to have tea. Now that you have come, you have to play,” Chopra added.

Varun Chakravarthy India Career

Varun Chakaravarthy made his India debut for Team India in July 2021 against Sri Lanka in Colombo. In the same match, he picked up the wicket of the then-Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka. Since then the 33-year-old has played 18 T20I matches for India and is in line to play his first ODI match as well when the series against England kick-off on February 6.
