In a shocking turn of events, England’s white-ball skipper, Jos Buttler, has stepped down as skipper of England’s white-ball side. In Saturday’s final group game against South Africa, the 34-year-old will take the captaincy for the last time.

This decision was brewing ever since England’s dismal show in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025, where England failed to make it to the semifinals. In their last 21 one-day international matches, England has suffered 15 losses, including losses to Afghanistan and Australia that put an end to their Champions Trophy campaign.

Jos Buttler: “It’s the right decision for me, the right decision for the team”

Jos Buttler announced his decision in a press conference on Friday. The wicket-keeper batter said,

I am going to stand down as England captain. It’s the right decision for me, the right decision for the team.

“Hopefully somebody else can come in and work closely alongside Baz [head coach Brendon McCullum] to take the team back to where it needs to be.”

“It’s quite clear [what prompted this decision],” Buttler added. “This tournament was going to be important results-wise for my captaincy, and obviously two losses and being out of the tournament with a bit of a hangover from some tournaments before, it probably reached the end of the road for me and my captaincy.

“It’s a shame, I am sad about that. With Brendon only coming in recently, I was excited about working closely with him and hoped for a quick turnaround to take the team forward, but it’s not worked out that way. It feels like it’s the right time for me and for the team to have a change.”

Jos Buttler didn’t have the best of times as England’s white-ball skipper. The wicketkeeper batter had a winning percentage below 50 in ODIs and just a touch above 50 in T20Is, which almost summarizes his captaincy stint. Take a look at his captaincy numbers below,

Who could be the next England White-Ball Captain?

With Jos Buttler stepping down, the next big question in England cricket is who will take the reins forward? The answer to this question lies in the current squad, with vice-captain Harry Brook being the front-runner for this role. However, there is no official announcement yet from the English Cricket Board and it would be interesting to see who will be Buttler’s successor.
