Rohit Sharma is set to lead India in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. However, the reports of BCCI’s search for a long-term captain in both Test and ODI formats have surfaced on the internet. Going by these stories, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the prime contenders for the future captain of Indian Cricket Team.

Rohit Sharma Retirement looms!

Rohit Sharma will turn 38 this April and the next ICC event after ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is quite far. It is learnt that the think tank of Indian team management wants a smooth transition in leadership.

According to TOI, the selectors have already held discussions with Rohit Sharma regarding his future plans after the 2025 Champions Trophy.

BCCI is looking ahead towards the 2027 ODI World Cup and want to look for a stable leader to take the team forward in both formats.

“He (Rohit) has been told that he needs to decide how he wants to plan his future after the Champions Trophy,” a BCCI source told TOI.

Rohit Sharma’s Test form worrying

Rohit Sharma had a dismal returns in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 that concluded recently. Going by his recent form, the selectors are worried, and want to give someone else a go at the helm for the new World Test Championship cycle.

Who Will Be the Next India Captain?

Indian selection committee is keen to choose from the likes of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the next captain of Indian National Cricket Team.

  • Shubman Gill is already serving as ODI vice-captain and is a strong contender for the full-time role basis the form in the last couple of years.
  • Rishabh Pant is seen as a natural leader who has has shown impressive tactical and leadership acumen in IPL.
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal is one of the most promising batsmen in the Indian cricket at the moment and has displayed consistency across formats.

Why Bumrah May Not Be Considered for India Captaincy?

Jasprit Bumrah should be the natural successor for the role given his performances. However, his fitness remains a major concern. Plus, the management doesn’t want to put pressure on him given the demanding nature of a full Test season.

“Bumrah’s chances of a long Test series or completing a full season will always be in doubt. The selectors may want a more stable option,” a source told TOI.
