Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking the end of an illustrious red-ball career. The 38-year-old, who debuted in 2013, played 67 Tests, amassing 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57. His record includes 12 centuries, 18 half-centuries, and a career-best score of 212.

The veteran Indian cricketer announced the news on his Instagram story ahead of India’s tour of England 2025.

“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

A Leader Who Steered India to Historic Wins

Sharma’s leadership saw India reach the World Test Championship final against Australia in 2023, a significant milestone in his captaincy. He led India in 24 Tests, winning 12, losing 9, and drawing 3. His tenure included series victories against Sri Lanka (2-0), Bangladesh (2-0), Australia (2-1), West Indies (1-0), and England (4-1). All these victories came at home, barring the 1-0 win over the West Indies in the Caribbean.

Rohit Sharma’s White-Ball Legacy To Continue

Beyond Tests, Sharma has been a dominant force in ODIs and T20Is. In 273 ODIs, he has scored 11,168 runs at an average of 48.77, including 32 centuries and 58 fifties. He holds the record for the highest individual ODI score (264 runs) and has struck 344 sixes, the most by an Indian in ODIs.

In T20Is, Sharma has played 159 matches, scoring 4,231 runs at a strike rate of 140.90, with 5 centuries and 32 fifties. His leadership in the Mumbai Indians has been instrumental, securing five IPL titles.

Who will be the next Test skipper of Team India?

With Sharma stepping away from Test cricket, India will need to appoint a new captain, with contenders including Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. With India set to tour England in June for a 5-match Test series, expect the announcement of the new Test skipper to take place ahead of the tour.
