The Shreyas Iyer-led side, Punjab Kings, who are eyeing a spot in the playoffs, have been dealt a massive injury blow. Star Aussie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the ongoing Tata IPL 2025 due to a fractured finger.

Glenn Maxwell Ruled out of IPL 2025

The news was revealed yesterday ahead of the CSK vs PBKS match, 49 of the Tata IPL 2025. During the toss, Punjab’s skipper revealed that Maxwell has a broken finger and is probably out for the rest of the season. Here’s what Shreyas quoted during the toss:

“It’s very unfortunate that he’s got a fractured finger. To be honest, we haven’t decided about the replacements yet so far but we are pretty strong in our team’s mindset and what we have outside of our playing XI. We’ve got a variety of players who can win you matches. So we’re going to stick to that as much as possible.”

Maxwell’s PBKS and Australian teammate Marcus Stoinis confirmed the same news. Stoinis revealed that the injury wasn’t that serious early on, but the scans revealed mixed results. Stoinis told the broadcasters,

“He didn’t think it was too bad, but it ended up getting pretty bad. He had scans and, yeah, the results weren’t great. So unfortunately for Maxi, I think it’s likely he’s out for the tournament.”

It is believed that Maxwell suffered this injury during PBKS’ rain-curtailed match against KKR at the Eden Gardens. The Aussie all-rounder struggled with the bat throughout the tournament, managing only 48 runs in six innings. His form dipped further in his last four matches, where he recorded single-digit scores. Despite his batting woes, he made an impact with his off-spin, claiming four wickets. He was acquired for INR 4.2 crore in the last mega auction.

Glenn Maxwell is the second overseas player to get injured for PBKS this season. New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson was the first one to get injured and ruled out. The latter suffered a hip injury and had to leave the tournament midway.

Who will replace Maxwell?

As of now, the team management led by head coach Ricky Ponting has yet to take a call on Maxwell and Ferguson’s injury replacement. They have time till their 12th match to name the replacement, and it remains to be seen who joins the squad after almost the 6th week of the season.
