There’ no secret that the Indian cricket team is going through a transition period at the moment. Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from all forms of cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Series, while the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja quit the T20 format following India’s win in the 2024 T20I World Cup. It’s a painful sight to see your favorite player saying goodbye to the sport, but it also opens doors for new players, a chance to show that they are ready to take the team forward.
At the moment, the focus is on young players such as Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Shubman Gill is definitely is in the discussion.

Shubman Gill on competition for places between him, Jaiswal & Abhishek Sharma
Since there’s no dearth of talent in India when it comes to cricket, there has always been a tough competition between players when it comes to finding a place in the Indian cricket team. But we have seen that it’s a healthy competition, a case of mutual respect rather than holding grudges. Shubman Gill also said the same during a recent interview.
“Abhishek is a childhood friend of mine. Jaiswal is also a friend, I don’t think there is any toxic competition between us,” Shubman Gill on Abhishek Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
“Obviously if you are playing for the country you want to perform in every match, and not think that ‘I wish this guy doesn’t perform’. You are playing for the country and for the team and whosoever performs you congratulate them,” the 25-year-old added.
Shubman Gill On India’s poor performance in BGT Trophy
Shubman Gill also touched upon the subject of India’s poor performance in the Border-Gavaskar series, which the Men In Blue ended up losing 1-3, despite winning the first match. One of the biggest reasons for the debacle down under was the poor performance from India’s batting unit, with the likes of Virat, Rohit and Shubman himself, failing to get going.
“Definitely, we have not done what we wanted to do in the Australian series. But still, I think we have done some things right. We had the chance to draw and even win the series. If we would have won the series or even managed to draw it, we would not have been talking about this,” Gill added.
The 25-year-old batter highlighted that Indian cricket team deserves more credit for the performance in the last couple of years.
“It is unfair to criticise the team’s performance. We have won a World Cup (T20) and prior to that we reached the final of the ODI World Cup. We must consider those performances as well.”
In addition, Gill also said that the upcoming three-match ODI series against England is a perfect opportunity for the preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
“I think we are playing against a good side. We are not taking this as a practice for the Champions Trophy, I think it is a very important series for us and we are looking to dominate and win this series,” he said.
