In a shocking turn of events, Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from ODI cricket with immediate effect. Stoinis, who made his ODI debut back in 2015, featured in 71 games and ended with 1495 runs, averaging a mere 26.7 and scalping 48 wickets at an economy of 6. The all-rounder was named in Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad, but now the team management will have to look for a replacement.
Marcus Stoinis will continue playing in T20Is
During his retirement statement, Stoinis specified that he will continue playing franchise and International T20I cricket as long as he can. Here is what he said in his retirement statement,
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,”- Stonis said.
“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support,” he added.
A lot of changes are expected in the Australian Champions Trophy 2025 Squad
With Marcus Stoinis’ retirement and Mitchell Marsh’s unavailability due to injury, the Australian squad looks a bit fragile. Also, with clouds of doubts looming over the unavailability of seamer Josh Hazlewood and skipper Pat Cummins, the Australian team is in a dire situation, and a lot of tweaks in the previously announced squad are expected.
There are some all-rounder options available in Australia’s domestic circuit, but the exposure in a world event like the Champions Trophy would be lacking. As of now, Beau Webster seems to be the frontrunner to take Marcus Stoinis’ place in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad.
