Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a clinical victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Eliminator of IPL 2025 on Friday (May 30) in New Chandigarh. The win helped Mumbai to progress to Qualifier 2, where they will face Punjab Kings.
Rohit Sharma’s knock help MI post a big total
After being invited to bat first, Mumbai opener Rohit Sharma received a couple of reprieves, before Jonny Bairstow gave a sensational start to MI. Bairstow slammed 47 off 22, before his 84-run stand was ended by Sai Kishore in the eighth over.
Rohit picked up his momentum and combined with Suryakumar Yadav (33) to form a potent 59-run partnership. ‘Hitman’ was unfortunately dismissed on 81 off 50 in the 17th over.
Tilak Varma (25) and Hardik Pandya (22*) played well to propel MI to a mammoth 228-run total. Prasidh Krishna and Sai Kishore bagged two wickets apiece for the Titans.
Timely wickets help MI emerge as winner
In response, GT lost Shubman Gill (1) early, as Trent Boult trapped him LBW in the first over. Although, Kusal Mendis (20) got a start, he couldn’t convert it into a significant knock.
Then, Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar built a terrific stand, and kept GT in the hunt. However, their 84-run stand was put to an end by Jasprit Bumrah, who dismissed Sundar (48) in the 14th over.
A couple of overs later, Richard Gleeson went past the defense of Sudharsan (80). In the end, MI won the game by 20 runs.
