Hattricks, in any format of the game, are the rarest of achievements. While there have been moments when bowlers picked up wickets on two straight balls, but only a handful of bowlers managed to complete this outstanding milestone. During the match no-2 of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 between India and Bangladesh, India’s Axar Patel was on the cusp of achieving this rare feat, which might have been a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.
IND vs BAN CT 2025: Rohit Sharma drops a simple catch
It was Axar Patel’s first over and the spinner made a telling impress on the second ball when he took the wicket of Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan. The 31-year-old then took the big wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim on the very next ball. With Bangladesh reeling under pressure, Jaker Ali walked on to the pitch. Bangladesh middle-order batter was facing the hattrick ball, and Axar delivered a perfect ball. The batter nicked the ball and the catch went straight to the slip where Indian captain was standing. It was indeed a straightforward catch, but for some reasons, Rohit couldn’t hold on to the catch, denying Axar Patel a chance of earning a hattrick. Watch the video:

Who was the first bowler to take a hattrick in ODI cricket?
Since the first ODI match between Australia and England on January 5, 1971, there have been only 50 instances where bowlers took a hattrick. The first bowler to achieve this rare event was Pakistan’s bowler Jalal-ud-din against Australia, who got the wickets of Rod Marsh, Bruce Yardley and Geoff Lawson.
As far as India is concerned, Chetan Sharma was the first Indian bowler to take a hattrick, who achieved the feat against New Zealand. Since then, Kapil Dev, Kuldeep Yadav (twice) and Mohammed Shami are the only bowlers to take hattricks for Team India in ODIs.
