England’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign has hit a massive roadblock as their young all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of the marquee event due to a left hamstring injury. Bethell sustained this injury in the first ODI against India at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on 6th February.
Bethell was set to appear in his first-ever ICC event
Jacob Bethell rose through the ranks in English cricket quite prominently. The 21-year-old all-rounder made his all-format debut between September and November 2024 for England and soon became a crucial member of the playing 11, especially in the white ball format.
His injury was revealed by England’s white-ball skipper Jos Buttler after the second IND vs ENG ODI in Cuttack on 9th February.
“I’m pretty sure he’s been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest. That’s really disappointing for him, obviously he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players so it’s a shame that the injury is going to rule him out.”– Said Jos Buttler.
With wicket-keeper Jamie Smith already nursing his calf issue and Bethell being ruled out, England has called upon Somerset opening batter Tom Banton, who last represented the English side in 2022 in the white ball format.
Who could replace Jacob Bethell in the Champions Trophy squad?
The England team management has a lot to ponder after Jacob Bethell’s injury. Sam Curran, who wasn’t named in either of England’s white-ball squads currently touring India, seems one of the names the selectors could think of. Sam was seen playing ILT20 for Desert Vipers and could be drafted in England’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad as Bethell’s injury replacement. As of now, there is no official word from the ECB over the replacement.
